Play - My thoughts on the future of Google Stadia

 Greetings & Salutations Googlers!

Whew, what a day for Stadians like myself. Yesterday Google announced that it was closing Stadia Games & Entertainment. Many people wrongly look at this as “Google exits gaming” So to show that I am more than a Razzle Dazzle Google Master. I’ve decided to put my brain and mouth to what I know most. Google, gaming and critical thinking.

Google shutting down this studio, doesn’t have a lot of impact on Stadia as a platform, so please, don’t think Stadia is going anywhere, it’s not. Google has decided it won’t focus on developing games internally, and until this month ends, I don’t wanna talk/speculate much more. (Although i’ve got some great ideas on twitter, gimme a follow if you wanna speculate wildly, lol)

While sadly about 150 programmers may not find jobs within Google from this. Those that do will instead probably become Stadia ambassadors, helping major and indie companies start using Stadia as a platform for their titles. Or even being paid to port those games themselves mahaps. What is clear is that the gaming platform, known as “Stadia'' is the beginning of a new gaming platform model. Cloud gaming is very much the future and will not be vanishing overnight.

While true Google has a nast PR history for “Killing” Apps/Services, as a Google Master, who pours over every app meticulously every major update. I can tell you, just because an app “is killed” it’s not dead. Typically to Google, a “New” app/service is a vessel to incubate a specific feature or code (that slightly but not really competes with a major competitor). Or sometimes they’ll just buy a company to get the designs they need and sell them later, like Moto.

Example, Allo. People like to joke about Googles history of chat apps. Allos was Googles RCS incubator. It also taught the Assistant many features that would trickle into Smart Displays and Suggested Routines. With Allo Google developed an amazing closed, secure RCS/iChat like app. It didn’t have much of a user base, so it was “killed” now almost 5 years later, Google Messages, the stock Google Texting app is practically Allo incarnate. (missing some cute features, like daily text reminders, quotes of the days and such 🀞) But even though Allo is “dead” it’s code lives on now.

So Google isn’t gonna make games in house, as a Stadian, I’m not overly impacted by this. While Outcasters was fun, and Orcs Must Die 3 is a hoot. They aren’t the games I’m playing daily right now. The gaming world is HIGHLY divisive and has as many cliques as a high school. Being a new Game Dev company on the block is hard work and when a major game that is in dev for 10 years, tanks the stock of it’s parent corp for “not meeting the standards of the players” it’s hard to sell a Gaming Production Company to your board as a long term success. So let other people “Make” the games, you’ll always be able to play them anywhere on Google Stadia. Is how Google is doubling down on this. Sadly their transparency really sucks and doesn’t actually reflect that much. But still, if you haven't, don't shy away from Stadia as a gaming alternative in both price and usability.

Stadia is too important to Google. Why? Well to know that I’m gonna start a series about Gaming Marketing, and Why Google made Stadia.

While I’m pretty much the biggest fan and shill of Google, basing my life and image around them, me as a critically thinking gamer. I ask questions and want to know everything, Stadia is the future, not just of Gaming, but data research as well. Follow me to find out more!

And remember, with Google, you can Work - Learn - Live & Play!, the only limit is your imagination!
